Position:Home>Performing Arts> I need a beginner Operatic tenor song to sing in my voice class?

Question:I've sang everything from classical to broadway and have won solo parts in my schools musical. But now that we are about chosing out last songs for voice class I am really intrested in an opera type song. In choir my voice stands out because of my strong midrange. My teacher said she loved my voice during a songs that we did called "He watching over Isreal" and "Ave Maria" which have alot of variation and that Monestary type song vibe to it. I have a wide range and want a simple/easy song to explore opera in. If anyone knows a song similar to "He watching over isreal" that is a solo song for a tenor or has that same vibe that would be great too!

Since you've already sung what I presume to be Schubert's "Ave Maria" and you're familiar with the oratorio ELIJAH, why don't you try "If with all your heart" from Elijah? Nice and lyrical and a good piece for a beginner. It would also fit into the "monastery" mode of which you spoke.

Happy studying.

Are you in voice lessons? As a music teacher, that's my first suggestion. Your voice teacher will assess you and give you their opinion.

If you're serious about developing your voice, then get in voice lessons.

Start working on your Italian!

As for your question, try "Every Time I Feel the Spirit" but I don't know offhand if there is a solo arrangement. Plenty of choral versions, though.

Have you looked at any of the solo's from the "Messiah" One of my favorites is "Comfort Ye My People" You can hear versions of it at iTunes or the such. Very challenging yet doable. Most communities also have a Messiah performance around Christmas that you could perform this for come December. :)

Although not written for a tenor, I've seemed to notice that "Ombra mai fu" is sometimes sung by singers at your stage. If I was in your situation, I might sing "Some Enchanted Evening" with an Italian accent just like Pinza did :P
