Well, do you want electric or acoustic?

Electric, I would recommend a Fender Stratocaster -- affordable, yet still plays well. DON'T get a first act guitar at Wal mart! It will turn you off from guitars forever!

Acoustic... there are tons of choices. My first acoustic was an Alvarez. I would recommend looking on Craigslist for something cheap, and try checking Guitar Center because they have lots of used guitars for less. My first acoustic was an Alvarez, that was a little over 200. My second one was a used Ovation that was a little over 200 as well. The Ovation had a better sound, plus it was electric/acoustic so I didn't have to mic it when I performed.

Don't get a 12 string -- it's the same thing as a 6-string, however it projects a different sound. It will be hard to learn if it is your first guitar. Basically, it is the same tuning, however, you have to push down two string instead of one.

My advice is to learn scales and picking techniques before you learn chords. Learn the notes and not just tablature, because it will make your life SO much easier when you play with someone else and they ask you to do a solo.

Regards!

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure 6 strings is for beginners.

welll go with a six string

and check out lower costing guitars such as squiers and epiphones..
but if you plan on playing for a while, go with fender or gibson or more expensive guitars..

-strats are good to learn on cause theyre very useful in mostly every type of musical genre.
