Question:i just figured out how to pick.. i know a few scales and i can play pretty fast and it does sound good. cept i dont really know where the notes are or where to go for solos.. and when i try to learn tabs it slows me down to the point where i give up.. any advice to overcome this? how did you learn where every note is?

I learned to play by ear, but eventually I learned the neck.
I still play by feel, I dont look at the neck and see notes.

I would suggest a teacher to help guide you through the process.

I use Guitar Pro, it's a fantastic program that shows you note by note how to play songs, or you can download any song and it will analyze it for you and tell you what notes are being played.

Most solo's are just variations of the same scales. For example, 99% of southern rock/blues solos are just the penatonic scale, which is probably the easiest one to learn. If you learn your scales, you can just figure out what key the song is in and it's really easy to figure out from there.
Step one - learn the five positions of the Penatonic
step two - get a loop of a blues riff and just play around with the scale for a couple hours every day so you're familiar with it
step three - rock out.
