Well technically there is no "free site" =), however there are trial sites that will allow you to learn little to nothing. abclearnguitar.com is a pretty efficient site. Guitartricks.com is a good site, but is very limited. I strongly suggest you go to Guitar Center, or something like that to get some books about the guitar, because most of these sites will only limit you to what they have to offer as a whole site. If you get books on how to learn guitar, it will effectively teach you the guitar, of course since you are only learning the acoustic guitar, it shouldn't be that hard compared to the electric guitar. In the end you are better off paying to learn the guitar because you will learn more that way instead of being confused with the free stuff. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Just about all websites, videos, and books are equivalent. None are good enough.

The reason? Because you need someone who can watch you and correct little errors in fingering and wrist position. If you don't get those things corrected at first, and you learn them wrong, then you limit your potential--and in the worst case, you can develop carpal tunnel or other repetitive motion injuries.

A dozen or so half-hour lessons should set up your fundamentals. Then you probably are best to use several different websites, books or videos (shop for those on ebay or at a used bookstore). Find ones that you like, and play a range of them--you'll learn more, faster.

To find that teacher--try putting a note on a bulletin board at a nearby college music department, if you can get a senior guitar major it'll probably be cheaper (maybe $15 per half hour). If that doesn't work, look at the best full-service music store in your town.

One more thing: as a beginner, play for no more than 10 minutes at a time, and try to schedule 4 or 6 practice sessions per day. Each week, extend the maximum time of at least one session by a couple of minutes; when your longest session is getting up to 20 minutes or so, drop the number. Eventually you build up to a full hour or more once daily, and (1) you make faster progress (2) you build stamina with little risk of blisters or tendinitis.

first be prepared to put a lot of time into it bit by bit 10 or 15 minutes at a time after that you wont take in to much start with a good guitar that has a good action on it i would suggest you learn the basics of theory as that will make things a lot easier for you as you advance your knowledge of the guitar as you get better you can move on to bar cords and that opens up hundreds of cord variations thats when the theory will come in very handy and make you a very good guitarist just stick at it for the first year and you will be fine and pick up all the help you can there is no such thing as self taught we all need help and ideas no matter how long your playing good luck

Are you itching to learn?
