Position:Home>Performing Arts> Do you really have to have your own bassoon if you want to play in college?

Question:Okay, this may sound kind of wierd considering I'm not even in high school yet. But, I've heard somewhere that you have to have your own bassoon if you plan to play in college. Is this true, or is it just with some colleges? Should I probably start trying to save up money, just in case by the time I go to high school, graduate and go to college, it turns out you have to have your own instrument?

If you are going to major in music in college, you need to have your instrument. Everyone except pianists and percussionist are required to bring their own instruments. You and your instrument are what makes the performance. No such thing as borrowing an instrument when you goto college. College is serious business, its not high school any more. If you want to be there to study and learn, you need to invest in your instrument.

Yes, you need to start saving your money. But you also need to by reed making equipment. Part of playing the bassoon is learning how to make reeds. If you don't have your own instrument, how would you practice, participate in orchestra and chamber music.

If you watch Blue Peter you can learn how too make one out of kitchen roll and sellotape.

I don't know about the bassoon but I bought my own clarinet in high school, and I plan to use it in college. If you buy a basoon they you can have it , if you want to be a music major. Usually most instrument rentals will let you rent your instrument for however long you want. If you keep on playing with the rental eventually you will pay it off, so it will be your instrument. That is what I did with my clarinet so I didn't have to pay for it all at once, but bassoons are a lot more expensive.

I'm not sure, but you probably do. What you might think about, is there is a thing called renting to buy. it's like you can rent something and pay a monthly fee. Over all the months, the money is saved up kind of and then the instrument pays for itself. that way if you decide to stop playing you don't have to have an extra instrument that you spent so much money on. That's what i'm doing with my violin, and it seems to work really well.

Well, the music dept. might loan you an instrument, but if you have your own, you won't have to worry about it.

I really have no idea, but probably not. Even if you couldn't borrow one from the school music department you could rent one from a music store.
