Position:Home>Performing Arts> Anyone have ideas on how to increase my movement speed along the fretboard? Guit

Question:I'd really like to improve the speed at which I move along the fretboard. (I'm right handed, so my left hand).

Does anyone have any ideas of activities that can improve my finger/movement/hand speed, even accuracy. Just little guitar activities built to improve playing? : )

"Walk the board" every day.

Start on the low E and play the first four frets with your four fingers then go to the A string and do the same. Then D, G, B, E and then go back up to the B, G, D, A, and E string.

Then slide you hand up the neck one fret and do the exact same thing. You hit every note.

Then slide your hand up the neck one fret and do it again.

Hit every fret all the way up the neck and then play it all the way back down to the first fret again.

This will both loosen your hand up and establish the "mind to fingers conncection" that you don't have when you first pick up your guitar.

Try to do this every day. Takes a couple minutes.

Keep your thumb strong on your chord hand, and keep your palm perpendicular to the neck. When you start getting an angle in your chord hand (like me), you lose a lot of speed. Keep your pinkie working hard too. I have done all the bad habits, and consequently, I'm....a good rhythm guy. I've got excellent bends and good legato, but sllllllooooooowwww note making. I blame my freakish large hands and the lack of 7 string necks in my formative years.

do scales. I never did them, and I'm sure that didn't help at all either. You'll be a Yngwie Malmsteen (whoa...did I spell that right???) in no time.

Seriously, I hit those letters near at random, but it looks right.
