Both instruments are brass, so either one you pick, you win! (Power to the brass!) But seriously, if you want to select an instrument that requires alot of air and support, pick tuba. The French horn, when played correctly, is probably one of the most beautiful sounding instruments (besides trumpet, of course! haha, gotta rep my instrumet). French horns contribute so much to any band, and I highly reccomend it. However, getting pitches on a french horn is not too easy. Pitch is probably what separates good french horn players from great ones. You need to have strong chops to reach high notes in pitch, or any notes what so ever, and of course, good tone. Of course, without the bass line of the tuba, you probably could't have a well functioning band/orchestra, but the choice is yours. Hopefully what I contributed helps to decide on what is better for you.

french horn b/c its smaller than a tuba... tubas will crush your body! Xp

french horn!
like the person above said...it's smaller
i think it's easier to carry french horns around from school to home etc
carrying tuba around...is hard :(
my brother plays it and it's really really heavy
people who play tuba at my school usually rent two tubas
they leave one at home and leave one at school
so they don't have to carry it around
that costs more money...so FRENCH HORN! lol

but if you really wanted to play the tuba i guess it wouldn't matter that much :)
good luck!

it depends alot on if you intend to do anything besides play in your orchestra.the french horn has alot more solo options both in the orchestra and by itself. but at most colleges and universities, the tuba section is the "fun" section.

the tuba is the base of the orchestra and no one every messes with the tuba player cus without them, your orchestra is in deep crap

i play the french horn and i love it cus it has such a gorgeous sound,so i'd recommend it.

hope that helps :)

seems like some folks here zare dissing tuba. cant put up with that!
both instruments are marvelous in their own right-the honest differences are that the tuba is the sound foundation of any group & the french horn is demandingly versatile. in orchestra-horn will get more notes in alot of music due tothe history of brass instruments being used in orchestras.
fact; horn has a huge range and you need really good control to play it well.
fact; tuba uses huge amounts of air-is usually not considered a melodic instrument.

i suggest you listen to some tuba solo music & some french horn solo music and see which sound you are truly more attracted to.

forget all the bigger vs smaller crap & most schools have a tuba to loan you so you may not have to rent!

french horn for 2 reasons:
1) well it is defiantly lighter
2) with tuba you don't get to play as much fun or challenging parts of an arrangement. tuba has mostly just whole, half, and quarter notes, but with french horn you play more fun stuff and sometimes little melodies.
