The smartest thing you can do is to go visit some guitar shops, tell them you are looking for your first bass, and let them show you both new and used basses. I don't know where you live, but here in Minnesota, one can get a perfectly usable bass for less than $200. Just make sure you get one that is not too heavy or too big for you, and learn to play sitting down as well as standing.

It would really be best if you could take lessons, but there are plenty of helpful sites on the internet. Just use Google to search:
