Position:Home>Performing Arts> Girls do you always curtsy after a performance and never bow?

Question:I am going to be playing a flute solo as part of a musical evening perfomance at school, but at the end I am expected to give a curtsy to the crowd, and then a bit later all the soloists are getting a plaque from our headmaster and someone else and the girls are expected to curtsy again too. This is what we've been told to do anyway... girls curtsy and guys bow.

Is this always true or do girls sometimes bow after a performance too instead of curtsying?

Just wondering what the norm is.

I'm an actor in musical theatre, so it depends on what character I am. You stay in character when you bow. The last time I was in a show, I played the leading lady, and she was an ingenue so I curtsied.

usually girls curtsy.

It is a generally accepted norm that girls curtsy and guys bow. The one exception I know of (from what I understand of Terry Pratchett) is that witches bow, albeit rarely...not a full-fledged bow from the waist, but more of a nodding kind of bow, as if to acknowledge that the bowee is someone they consider their equal or close to it.

All the best.

it's something that started a long time ago because women always had to wear skirts and men of course could wear pants. basically it just matters what you are wearing. if you plan on wearing dress pants like many girls do then i say bow if you feel more comfortable doing that. in our concert band, we never ever made girls curtsy. they always bow.

Actually, I'm a flute player and I've soloed a lot.

I always bow, because I always wear dress pants. I would say that bowing is ok if you are wearing pants. However, if you are wearing a skirt, I would curtsy.
