you can get a basic, no frills acoustic guitar for less than $100. I'm sure you can find one at Guitar World.

There is a big price range in guitars from the total plastic el cheapo sold in toy stores to several thousand dollar for professional instruments.

Your best bet is to walk into a good musical store and tell the sales guy, "I have X amount of dollars to spend on a beginning guitar. If you don't rip me off, I will be back." Starting off my naming your price is always a good way to find a good sales guy and getting a good axe.

The best time to go to a music store is in the afternoon on the weekdays. The most senior sales guys work at that time and are always interested in helping someone start playing. Also, you may want to consider pawn stores. There is usually few used guitars for sale there as a decent price.

After that, learn to tune and then start some basic chords. Have fun!

Try a Pawn Shop. The usually have a large variety to choose from. Make sure you check the Frets for wear. If there worn down too close to the neck, you'll have a hard time holding a note. It will sound flat, and the note will kind-of-frizzle out. You should be able to get a nice one for $ 50- $100 on the cheap side. If your just learning, there are Student Guitars that have narrower necks that make it easier for a youngster to get their fingers around. Again, I wouldn't pay more than $100. The price can go up from there.

A good acoustic guitar is Takamine. It is cheap, beautiful tone, good action and sell for $200.

You can get a basic guitar for around 50/60 pounds.
Not sure how much that is in dollars though.
