Hey i looked this up on dictionary.com and this is what i found out............
Mellophone:
a marching or military band brass instrument similar in appearance and range to the French horn but slightly smaller and simpler to play.

Hope this info helps you.
Thanks,
Sam

I think it is the marching version of the french horn.

it is basically a marching french horn. it looks like a mix between a trumpet and a flugel (if you know what a flugel is...if not...oh well)

MARCHING VERSION OF A FRENCH HORN.

bell front, right handed valves, same fingerings as trumpet, built in keys of "f" or "B flat". the essential design was borrowed from drum & bugle corps

the mellophone is the marching version of a french horn but they can also be used to double or cover saxophone parts...the timbre of the instrument is very similar to the upper register of the baritone which is a marching euphonium...3 valves key of F...flugelhorns are made into b flat of F and they are closer to the trumpet

It's a brass instrument used in place of the horm.
