Position:Home>Performing Arts> What is the difference between stage band and concert band?

Question:I'm not sure if it's the same for most schools, but in my high school(next year) there are many different band classes. I was just wondering what the difference between stage band and concert band is.

Stage band is also known as Jazz band. It is made up of a rhythm section (Piano, Bass, Guitar, and drums) a trumpet section, a trombone section, a saxophone section, and sometimes a vocalist. The saxes may double on clarinet and or flute. This type of group plays everything from Jazz and latin to rock and R&B. It is usually made up of people who are already in Concert Band, but not always.

Concert Band, or Wind Ensemble is the typical large band with everything but strings, although some bands have a string bass. This is the group that plays the football games, and marches in the parades. They play classical music for the most part, although there are some popular and jazz pieces written for concert band. This is also the group that uses the more esoteric instruments like oboe, bassoon, and french horn (natural horn)

Hope this helps and best of luck no matter what you decide to join. I would take the leap and actually talk to the Band director about it, since in many organizations you have to be in both groups if you want to be in stage or jazz band.

Stage band is more like an orchestra.

its just different levels.
like im in concert band right now.

stage band is bigger then concert band perhaps... stage band is more GRAND

It the type of music they play as much as anything... Concert bands play a more formal and precision type of music and stage bands are a bit looser.
