Position:Home>Performing Arts> How do you teach someone to play over the break? (for clarinet)?

Question:It's best not to start off with B and C as they are quite difficult to get. The best thing to do is get them to play a low G, then add the register key to get D, then do the same with A/E and Bb/F. Once they can get these notes, the they can do the same with low E up to B and low F up to C.

Once they can play in that register comfortably, the next obsticle is being able to go over the break smoothly. I would get them to keep their right hand down and to keep all the other fingers as close as possible to the keys.

A lot of students think that they have difficulty jumping from A to B or whatever, but the reality usually is that they just have difficuly playing the B fullstop. Make sure they can play the B on its own with ease before teaching how to jump from A to B.
