Position:Home>Performing Arts> Are there acoustic basses?

Question:Of course.

There are acoustic bass guitars that look like regular acoustic guitars except with longer scale, 4 string necks. They all seem to have piezo-electric pickups built in so that they can be plugged into an amp. They *can* be played unplugged without an amp, but the relatively small bodies tend to make them pretty quiet. They don't project real well, IOW.

If you want a string bass instrument that can be played acoustically, that will give you ample volume, tone and projection without an amp, get an upright double bass (aka "bass fiddle"). The bass member of the violin family can be played either with a bow or plucked with the fingers. its tuned the same as a bass guitar (E A D G, lowest to highest) -- but without frets.

Alvarez, Breedlove,Cort, Crafter, Jerzey, Dean, Eston, Gibson, Washburn, Ibanez, Maton, Ovation, Michael Kelly, Prestige Ribbecke Halfling Bass, Sunlite, Takamine, Tacoma, Tanglewood, Fender and Martin all make acoustic guitar.

Basically correct so far, except that there are some acoustic basses that have five strings, and there are also some that manage to generate a good tone when played unplugged.

Almost every acoustic bass sounds good on the high notes. If you're shopping for one, look for one where the low notes are full of tone and projection.
