The lowest line represents the sixth string (the fattest), and the other lines represent the other strings. Your guitar has metal ridges called frets and if you push a string down in the space between the "nut" (very first fret-like structure usually made of white plastic or nylon) and the first fret, and pluck that string, then that would be written as _1_ on the highest of the lines. As you have put above, the first chord is played by depressing the space between the 4th and 5th frets on the 5th (A) string along with the space between the 6th and 7th frets on the 3rd (G) string. Make sure that you push the string down closer to the higher numbered of the two frets, or your guitar will make a buzzing sound. Oh, and the x's on he 4th (D) string mean that that string is not to be sounded.

Letters EBGDAE are the guitar strings from top to bottom.

Dashes mean no fingers here!

Numbers refer to the fret.

There really is a lot more...
