I started out playing the bass guitar and I had never held a guitar in my hands before either.

I suggest you get a budget-priced starter package. Squier do a couple of good ones, the P Bass and J Bass packages. These are based on the Fender Precision and Jazz basses, two of the best available but both of which are very expensive. Squier are made by Fender under licence in Japan as economy models and they're pretty good.

If you want to be a soloist, you probably shouldn't be learning the bass at all because it's not really what bass is for, although there are obviously some good bass solos out there. Playing bass is about holding the band together, providing a foundation of rhythm and harmony for everybody else. If you start playing bass, you will have to develop your ear, meaning your ability to listen to songs and separate out all the parts in your mind, so that you can hear how they all work together. You will need to develop a good sense of rhythm, and you will need to be content with spending a fair amount of time in the background, being noticed less often than the singer and guitar players.

Having said that, one song that has a great bass solo is 'My Generation' by The Who. In general, John Entwistle (bass player in The Who until he died a few years ago) was almost the lead guitarist in that band because he was a better player of his instrument than Pete Townshend, the guitarist, was of his. The Who's recordings will repay careful study. Other great bass players include James Jamerson, who played on a lot of great Motown songs; Will Lee, who plays in David Letterman's band; Paul McCartney of the Beatles, one of the most influential players in history although not a flash player; and the late, great Jaco Pastorius, generally agreed to have been the greatest guy to pick up a bass guitar. I also am very fond of the playing of Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy - not a flashy player but he came up with great lines, which is actually more difficult.

If you're six foot six you're not gonna need a half-size bass, that's for sure. Good luck!

I see no reason why a ho can't play guitar, if she budgets her time correctly.

I started playing acoustic guitar a few years ago. I was self taught for a little while but finally made the most progression when I began private lessons. I noticed that I made the most progress when I was assigned something simple (at the start) and would have time to practice it in the comfort of my own house. Find short lessons (half hour to an hour) once a week, and if you are serious about learning, practice hard at home and enjoy the improvements : ) FYI - I spend less than $200 USD on my first guitar, and my current one is around $600. There are also 1/2, 3/4 and full size basses so look around to see what feels right. Good luck : )
