Question:I have been studying for 5 years, however my technique for 4-mallet marimba still seems really week. My proffesor tells me not to hold the mallets to tight. However when I loosen up it kills my technique. Any Suggestions?

It's something of a balancing act, sort of like juggling 4 balls on the ends of sticks. I'd suggest loosening up your grip and playing with very sloppy technique for a few weeks. Do this in the privacy of your own home. After a while (two weeks minimum, more like 6-8 weeks) you'll develop the fine motor control to do it well. It can't be rushed and has to develop naturally. Be patient with yourself and give yourself room to sound bad for a while. After you learn this your playing will take on a new level of control and sensitivity.

Also remember: practice slowly to improve quickly.

Stick with it and it will come to you.

Good luck!
