Yes you do, you really do!

Technically thats not a question it's a statement....

Composing is HARD!! have u studied music?? u must know about classical music to it's not straight forward like people think. I would suggest doing music all through school (if u have not already finished) then if u still want to compose go on to study music majoring in composition at uni. However it is very important u learn a musical instrument and u will have to be at a certain level on this instrument to enter uni. It will be very time consuming but good luck to u.

Assuming you want advice on how to proceed.

First off, learn an instrument proficiently. You might also wish to take voice lessons, but I'd recommend that in addition to an instrument, not instead of. If you haven't picked an instrument, piano is your best bet, but not the only choice.

If you're still in elementary or high school, you'll want to get whatever music theory education you can. If you have a good instrument tutor, make sure this is part of your lesson plan. Don't just get good at the instrumental technique. Learn from the underlying structure of the music. If you can't get that, at least pick up a good music theory tutor to work from. Even "Music Theory for Dummies" will be better than nothing.

Chances are that in high school you'll have more resources available to you, and you might be able to take beginning theory classes at the local community college.

If you're already out of high school, you'll want to hit the local CC, as just mentioned, and get started there. Of course, if you're already proficient at an instrument, and graduated high school with decent marks, you should be eligible to audition for a 4-year university.

If at college age you haven't composed anything yet, I would try to gain entry as a music major with whatever your primary instrument is. Otherwise you're going to have to compose some music, usually 2 or 3 contrasting works, in order to get in. If you haven't done this before, it will be quite difficult, unless you're a unique talent, to scratch out something of the quality necessary to gain you entry. Once you've gotten into the program and take the foundational course work, you'll be able to change your emphasis to composition anyway. There will be a lot of options at that point.

Anyway, back to the "if you're still in high school..." As you're learning theory, start writing music, as much as you can. Write-write-write. Write melody/chord, write 4-part when you get into the harmony, write whatever comes to your mind and heart during this time. Get plenty of practice. By the time you're ready to audition for university you'll hopefully have a few choice works you can use as audition pieces and get right in on that track.

If you're an adult, out of college, not going back, well, you can self-teach these things, though it won't be nearly as thorough as a formal education.

If you aren't proficient at an instrument, get piano lessons. Best bet. You can take another instrument, but so much of theory etc. is based on the western keyboard that it will be the most directly applicable to the study you'll need to do.

Get a good, comprehensive book on theory. Follow that with Harmony and counterpoint. After that perhaps orchestration. Mind, it will be very difficult to get through these with real understanding without some sort of guidance, but it's not impossible.

Anyway, good luck!

OK... so what is stopping you?... OH... you can't read MUSIC... well OK... then you will have to learn, won't you.?
