Position:Home>Performing Arts> Help with intonation on cello?

Question:I would like to improve my intonation, both in critical listening and in playing. I can tell if a note is grossly off (say an eighth of a tone) and whether it's sharp or flat, but am not so clear when it's just a few Hertz off.

Can you suggest any way to practice to get better? Websites? Electronics?

You could try using an electronic chromatic tuner to test yourself. I use one only to tune my violin but I do know that some people use one to periodically check that they are playing the correct notes.

Just move the bridge till she is IN.

Practice!

Well, in college, the music majors all start out in freshman year with ear-training and sight-singing. Many of them will walk around all day with a tuning fork, trying to remember exactly what pitch "A" is.

You can find ear-training and sight-singing books (and I suppose cds or dvds nowadays--back when I was in college we didn't even have VHS tapes).
