i agree with the first answer. voice lessons helped me a lot. but some things to do are:
(some may sound weird but it helped!)

breathe from your stomach and sides. you shouldn't fill up your lungs from just your diaphragm. when you do this, put your hands on your sides and press in gently. while doing that, go "ha ha ha" and you should feel those side muscles go out a bit. once you get control over them, hold onto your sides and breathe in. your sides should go out a little like it's pushing your hand away. when they're all the way out, make an f sound but short bursts and your sides should go out every time you say it. trust me, it helps you to get your breathing down and breathing is key when you're singing.

another way is to shout ahoy, hello, but use your sides and stomach to say it. accentuate the beginning of each word.

act like a siren by saying a. shoot upwards with your voice and go as high up as you can without having your voice crack. this helps with range.

work on vowel sounds. there are certain ways your tongue needs to be when you say them but it's hard to describe.

another is to always remember
NOT to sing from your nose or your throat. to help from not singing from your throat, or thrusting your chin outwards when you go up higher, hold your head at a level position and place your hand on your chin and sing. don't let it thrust forward.

hope some of these work!! good luck!

you really should take voice lessons. becoming a "better singer" isn't something you should do with self-training. you need help of an expert. sorry i know you wanted a different answers, but it's a fact.

you will be able to hear yourself better if you can sing into a microphone and listen to yourself through headphones. if you can't do that find someplace with an echo, like a stairwell or large restroom

There is no other way, voice lessons along with long, hard hours of practice are the only answer. Even then, if you were not born with a certain amount of ability there is a chance you may never improve to the level that you are aiming for.
