Pearl is also very good. They make their flutes with pointed arms on the keys, which gives them better response. (some other brands do this, but pearl does it on basically all of theirs)
They also construct their flutes with a pinless structure. You can go to their website and find out more about it.

I own a pearl, and it plays really well for me. I love it.

I have had a few different ones in my time. My first was a Gemeinhardt , and 25 years old! It was very good back then, but they slowly declined over the years in quality, although I've heard it is getting better.

I also had a Yamaha, which is a bit less expensive than other makes, but I think this is more of a beginners flute, so if you plan on playing long term, skip out on this brand.

My last flute (and piccolo) was an Emerson. Very lovely to play, and had a wonderful sound. Also had a very neat engraved flower on the lip plate.

Really it is just up to personal preference in the end. Make sure you try it out a bit in the store to see if you like it, and use a tuner to see if it is easy/hard for you to bend your pitch.

Ive got a whistle and a flute!...but Ive gotta get it altered...cos the trousers are too long!...jacket fits ok though...

i have a gemeinhardt. i like it.

If you can afford it, but a King or Selmer
