Good God! Definitely Michael Crawford. *waits for thumbs down* Yes, Gerry Butler looks better. O....k.....the Phantom was supposed to be ugly anyway! Movie versions always ruin everything....people always think the movie actor is God or something, and no one could ever be better than HIM!

My favourite Phantom ever is Hugh Panaro though. People seem to forget that the show has been on Broadway for 20 years. That's a lot of Phantoms!

gerard butler is better at everything...

Gerard? The man is a rock singer. His voice wasn't made for the Phantom. He did a good acting job, but vocally, it wasn't really very good for the Phantom. It had no musical nuance. I do however like his voice. It's just not suited for the part.

I don't particularly like Crawford's voice, but his nuance, dynamic and vocal range are incredible. You can hear every emotion of his character in every note. Almost every non-musician I know chooses Gerard because they saw the movie first. But ask almost any musical buff or musician and you'll hear the same thing.

I'm not dissing Gerard's efforts. They were good. But its like Emmy Rossum, she's no Sarah. I mean, Weber wrote the part for his wife's voice so its hard to walk into that.

Anywho, what did you think?

When adapting the smash hit musical into the movie, a few changes here and there were made. One of these included the notion of the Phantom's character. Unlike the musical, the cast for the movie is quite a bit younger, making the cast more appealing and easier for the target audience to relate to. Crawford's Phantom seduces Christine through his music, while Gerard's Phantom, in addition, is a "sexier" character. Michael Crawford has a voice that is trained specifically for musical theatre. Gerard Butler, on the other hand, had experience through his rock band. Longtime Phantom "Phans" tend to prefer the theatrical voice of Crawford, while new fans generally prefer Butler.

When it comes down to it, they both have fabulous voices, and have their own spectacular interpretations of the Phantom, it just all comes down to who you prefer.
