Question:for Christmas this year, or maybe even her Birthday, I want to get her a guitar. What kind should I get her? she is 10 and has never played one before. I know nothing about them, if they come in sizes or beginners, or whatever, I know nothing. and are the instruction videos videos worth it. or should I get her personal lessons. how much are they approx.? are used ones from ebay and/or craigslist good?

thanks

For a beginner a first act from Wal -Mart would be good. It will be enough to get her learning chords and putting things together. If she likes softer music, go with an acoustic though. You won't need an amp and acoustic is a really good learning tool. They have electric acoustics out there that you could get her as well, but price wise it would probably depend on what she wanted to play.

you can get one from eBay, but get a "new" one, not used. and i play...and my dad does..."Taylor" guitars are REALLY good, but i don't know you want that expensive for a 10 year old. maybe one of those cheep ones at walmart. you could also go to the guitar store and ask around there.

Do not buy her a guitar from walmart. or any other department store. its not worth the hassle.

craigslist and ebay are good for used guitars. check those out first to find a guitar within your price range.

if you can't find any. i would go to your nearest guitar center, small music store, or even a pawn shop. and ask them. they have smaller "junior" guitars and very inexpensive guitars that will last you much longer than your typical "first act" walmart guitar.

Get a used guitar from a music store. You never know what you might get on ebay and then, if you find a defect, you will lose time and money to get refunded.
But a 3/4 guitar or better still, buy a full size classical. Nylon string are not as big as acoustic guitar. It will be easier on her little hand and fingernails.
Get the video or a Melbay gitar book. Its not hard to learn and I can imagine that their isn't too many ways to hold it either.

I taught young people with a full size guitar. Eventually, these 10 yrs old grow super fast.
