I play acoustic guitar, too! I have a twelve string washburn acoustic with electric pick up and it has the nicest warmest tones to it.

I think it's great you want to improve your skills and you've been given some fairly good tips here, so I'll try to come up with some new stuff for you.

I'm going to assume you're new and starting at the very beginning, okay?

Get a squishy ball.

Yep, she said squishy ball. But make it one that's kinda tough so it exercises your hand muscles.

When I first started playing, I remember it really hurt my hands because I was using muscles I didn;t normally use in ways I wouldn't normally use them. By strengthening my hands and fingers, it wasn't so hard to play chords (and some of them are serious aren't they? lol) and it helped me a lot. Yep, I walked around squeezing a squishy ball for a while....

Stretch before and after,

Yep, warming up your hands is a good thing. Fingers, too. Goes with the squishy ball idea. Also, can improve your reach and help to make barre chords (the weird chords you play up the fret when you hold all the strings down and then make a chord to play) a lot easier to do.

I queried "Free guitar lessons online" and got the following usually interactive links you might like to try:

I used to like to listen to songs and try to figure out how to play them, but I'd get stuck a lot. You can go to a search engine, put in the name of a song with the words "lyrics chords" after it and usually find a site to help you. That was always fun.

You can also take a crack at learning scales and music theory (easy query from any search engine, pick your link).

My all time favourite thing to do that helped me get different rhythms down as to take a song I like and play it in a different genre than it was recorded in. For example, I really like the song "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star. It's ambient pop, really, but I tried played it reggae style, then blue grass, then heavy metal (on electric) - It was really, really fun. It makes you laugh and you learn something without it being like traditional practice and so boring!

You can also go to YouTube and look up videos about guitar lessons. I;d check GUBA, too, as they have lots of good videos there.

Either way, congrats on taking up the guitar. Have fun and welcome to the club!

Practice, practice, practice. Only way to do it.

lock yourself in your room with your guitar and nothing else for at least 5 hours a day...or more if you can
good luck

just practice...theres no magical way to just get better

take lessons and print out tabs. practice a lot

get some free lessons on the computer they work really well. I was trying to learn the guitar too. Then i found this free lessons and then now i am playing the electric guitar at gigs. BOOOYAH!!

Hey, I just started 4 weeks ago! I can play American Idiot by Green Day so far. All you gotta do is practice, but it might take some time

Try looking for Justin Guitar on youtube. he is this british dude who has a free online course on you tube. it goes from very beginner to advance.

Here's how I started, buy a book of songs you know which also shows you how to play the chord and then play along with it. I used the beatles complete and learned to play quite well in 3 months. Other than that www.jamguitar.com or Youtube.

The reason I suggested to buy a book of songs you know first of all is that you will easily pick up something you are already familiar with.

Good luck and keep on strumming - one day it will all just suddenly make sense.

The one thing that I can tell you is to have a teacher.....that to me is the best and fastest way to learn.....you have to learn the correct way in order to become a real musician. I just took on a new student for acoustic guitar, he's been playing for about a month, and already he can play and read the music notation for all the notes in the first position, he can do about five scales, and at least ten chords, and change with ease !!! He's left handed and is playing right handed, that amazes me !!!!!! He's also learning some theory.....I think having a teacher makes it much easier.....If you can't afford that try some of the online sites that teach guitar, some of them are pretty good, why not look at a few !!!!!!! At the end I'll give you some of the free sites but I'm not crazu about them, there not very complete.

ok this is where i started-
i got a guitar and got a hand (lost mine in accident), then i plucked the strings quite regularly.
I believe that this is the best way as i now have a recording contract and perform with my guitar on a regular basis.
I hope this helps.
