Performing arts high schools still require that students follow a regular curriculum (ie math, science, language arts and all that). However, on top of that you will have private lessons, be part of ensembles, take music theory classes, and have other music electives. Perhaps learning a different instrument or something. Vocal programs are mostly classical, but they also branch out. There are a lot of after school rehearsals and performances. It's rigorous but a lot of fun. There are a lot of collaborative things such as musicals. You have singers plus orchestral musicians plus artists for sets and stage managers and lighting...the list goes on. You put on operas which require the same things.

It is a bit like Step Up except not so student run. There's not as much freedom as that. I'm sure Beyonce sang both pop and classical (opera). But classical training sets you up for ANY kind of singing. Mariah Carey's mom was an opera singer.

Another thing is, as a singer, you'll probably be required to learn a language or two because classical music is often in French, Italian or German.
