Either way will work. You dont need to master the chords in the beginning, but play them often so you dont forget them. You can also go to ultimate-guitar to learn the songs that use tabs (songs without chords) in the meantime. Good luck!

well, you have to know what you're playing first
basically those songs that don't use chords are a series of arpeggios, intervals, triads and scale usage..
do you know what an arpeggio is?
do you know what an interval is?

it is better to learn chords and then you'll know how songs are built

Listen dude, ive been playing for 5 years, have a recording contract with my band and HELLLL YESSSS, learn chords first. it is the essence of the guitar "language"!!!!!!

I used abclearnguitar.com it teaches you the basics for free and stuff. its usefull i was able to learn the guitar in a month and now i like...know how to play and stuff. ultimate-guitar.com isnt good for acoustic guitar players ive had a hard time trying to find acoustic tabs and a lot of the time the tabs are incorrect. If i where you i would pick up a copy of "Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method Grade 1" its about $8.00. and if you get the expanded edition it comes with a dvd that shows you how to play. but then again evryone learns in a diffrent way.

i hope this information helped Good luck.

these folks are kicking some good advice out there but if you want to be an expert in any instrumental field you have to be able to read. so buy a book get with a real teacher and learn that trash. read chord diagrams read stacked chords. do things in keys that have way too many sharps or flats or both. learn your scales and tons of theory. learn all that and you will leave your brother in the dust. learn how to build your nonexistent chops. do all this and enjoy it. i challenge you
