Hi Jim (not your real name),

I don't think I'll be saying anything different from most of the others on this list.

Most anyone who has the desire and the perseverence to receive coaching from a competent voice teacher can improve their voice, how they sound, the degree of flexibility it has, it's expressive qualities and its range. To become a good singer, one also has to have a "good ear." This means that you find it easy to sing in tune when you sing a melody, and also possess some innate musical sense.

I'd suggest that you have a friend or two who are themselves musical and decent singers listen to you and tell you whether you "sing in tune." Perhaps sing for a choir director or voice teacher and ask for his/her feedback too - just so you know how to think realistically.

If the feedback is positive and if you have both desire, drive and discipline to pursue it, then look for a good voice teacher and start voice lessons. You'll know soon enough whether it is something you want to do over the long haul, or not.

Best wishes to you.

It does help to take lessons.
But some people will not ever be good singers, even with lessons. Some people are just tone-deaf. Singing is a gift

You should definitely go to a teacher and have him or her assess your voice. It is important not to be tone deaf and to have the basic ability to sustain a tone. Training can go a long way after that. Training and practice. Ask the teacher for an honest assessment and prepare yourself for either answer. What will you do if you can't be a singer? What will you do if you can? If you can't, do you want to play an instrument that doesnt' require a musical ear? If you can, how far do you want to go?

I hope this helps.

well with lessons you can get beter, but no, not everyone can had a good voice. Some people are tone-deaf and others can only hear in monotone.
i am tone deaf, so i will never have the best singing voice.
