I am a professional flutist and teacher. You will get the best results when you study with a fine teacher. The flute uses MORE AIR than any other wind instrument - including the tuba! So learning the correct way to breathe is critical. The intake of air should be warm, slow, and a deep sound like a yawn - NEVER high-pitched or gasping. Stand with the best possible posture, and ribs up and expanded - as if you were trying to keep a tube top from slipping down (if you are a girl . . ). HSSSSSSSS out the air for as long as you can do it, keeping the ribs up and out, and shoulders back. Do NOT collapse or curl forward. If you do this a few times, you will feel that it is effective - you will get tired - but be careful of getting dizzy at first. If you practice long tones, like the beginning Taffanel exercises, you can work those rib muscles and abdominal support as you work on tone. People talk about using the diaphragm - well, can you FIND it??? Nope - it is buried too deep inside you - so we use those muscles that we CAN control, to teach those that are internal. This will not improve today or tomorrow - but you WILL see improvement over time. Good luck with your solo - I am a state judge in NY.

When I was in band and chorus this was a big thing-swimming! We would swim several times a week. Also, deep breathing exercises. you know-breathe deep in through your nose-hold several seconds-blow out slowly through your mouth. do it several times a day.

I used to play flute, too. I learned that (I don't know if you know this or not), but it helps ALOT if you breathe from your stomach not your chest....you hold more air down there. It might make you pooch out a little bit, lol, but the sound is also a whole lot better when you play from the stomach and not the chest.

swimming, running, etc. anything that would require lots of air. Biking is good too. practice holding your breath when you take a shower or anytime like that.

mostly vigerous cardio exercises, like running and swimming. they are sooo good for you and i sing competitively so i do those things too! they help a TON

THE BEST WAY to increase your lung capacity is to practice holding your breath under water. Try to increase your time by a couple of seconds each time. I am a vocalist and this technique has helped me a lot!!!

when you breathe in, make it sound like a deep gust of wing is blowing.
it will fill up the top and bottom parts of your lungs, where just sucking air in will fill up the top part.
practice this every so often and try to think of this when you are playing your instrument.
it will begin to come naturally.
dont be afraid to practice it if you start breatheing how you normally do.
I was told of this by a professional musician, so trust it to work.

A lot of practice, running, exercising, swimming etc, try this for about six months and see if you don't notice a difference !!!!!

I think you should make out with certain new band members and practice your breathing that way ;)
