Position:Home>Performing Arts> Choir music vs. Pop/Punk Music Are they that different??

Question:I'm a section leader in choir and my teacher really thinks that I have potential in vocal music. One thing that is really annoying to me is that I find choir music so much harder to sing than Pop and Punk Music which I mainly listen to. I feel like I can't add the tone that so many people say that I have to choir music as much as I can to pop/punk music. Also one extra thing... I really want to persue a career in vocal music, should I try auditions for musicals and stuff?? I have no idea where to start...

the difference between pop and choir music has a lot of reasons.

the diction for one, in pop you can sing anything like how you talk, but when you sing in choir, you're supposed to sing with a lightly rounded quality like a british accent.

also with pop, you probably dont have a piece of sheet music in front of you, so you can make it your own, which is that "tone" that people say you have. Its hard to make choir music your own because you're so focused on the notes in front of you.

not to mention when you sing in a choir, your not supposed to make it your own. when singing in a group, your supposd to try to make every single person's voice match, to make it sound like 1 person singing, rather than 15.

If you learn the music where as you have it memorized, it will be easier for you to give it your own personal tone, if thats what you want.

or it could just be that you feel more comfortable singing pop, i know that when i try and sing a style that im not familiar with, i dont sound as good.

hope i could help.

As all musicians should, you should follow your heart. If I had not followed my heart, I would not be playing guitar (I would have ended my musical career years ago in school. But no, I followed my heart and now am in a local band that gets regular plays in the local circuit, and I'm only 18...so yeah. Just follow your heart, do what you want to do. And hey, Metal!

yes, you should try to audition for musicals and choirs. experience will help you as a musician.
