Question Home

Position:Home>Performing Arts> Where can I find background music for playing guitar?

Question:Looking for tracks that take well known songs and remove the vocals/lead guitar or both. Even if they aren't well known, just something with percussion and bass to play over. I've seen people use these a lot in youtube videos and such, but can't find anything on my own. I'd prefer free options, but if you know of places you can buy this kind of thing that would be helpful too. Thanks!

ALSO THE LOCAL MUSIC STORE WHERE YOU BOUGHT YOUR AX PROBABLY HAS EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. Report It

  • Jamey Aebersold Jazz sells CDs of great rhythm sections performing the rhythm parts from jazz tunes, for jazz musicians to practice over the top of. The only thing is that these are obviously usually jazz tunes, so you're not going to find any pop or rock songs in the repertoire. Though there are a lot of volumes that feature songs from the great American songbook - Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, stuff like that.

Lots of luck trying to find this type of music, I searched all over for certain pieces and forget about it....it's either in tab and not complete or they don't have it......so I gave up.....what I do is call my local music store and if they don't have it they order it for me.....I went crazy looking for the guitar rendition of the theme from the Godfather, all I ever got on line was the single note sheet music, and I wanted the finger style, the only place that I found it was a site that gave guitar lessons and you had to join to get this music....I've taught classical and acoustic for years I didn't need to join this site for a piece of sheet music...and I think it costs $40.00 to join....and believe it or not as popular as that song was it was impossible to find on the Internet. I still can't find it, if you or anyone knows where to purchase this I'd be grateful for the site or store, " Godfather Theme " for finger style guitar !!!!!!!!!! So call your local music store, you'll save yourself a lot of aggravation, good luck !!!!!!!!!!

There's a software program called Band In A Box that does exactly this. You type in the chord progression in whatever key you want, set the tempo, select a style or genre of music (anything from various styles of rock and jazz to bluegrass to country to whatever...) and the software will generate a backup accompaniment track with full band instrumentation (drums, bass, rhythm guitar, keyboard, whatever is stylistically appropriate) that will play your song or chord progression over and over as many times as you want for you to practice soloing over. You can get the basic software for about $80. Not cheap, but it might be just the thing you're looking for.
