Really the best way is to have lessons so you really have to convince your parents to let you have lessons you can buy books CD videos or learn off the Internet but nothing beats one on one lessons to tune the guitar you need Pitch Pipes, a Tuning fork, an in tune Piano or Keyboard or an Electronic tuner

the best site i have seen on the net for learning is http://www.nowplayit.com where you get professionals or the artists them selves to teach you how to play their songs

visit www.ultimateguitar.com

also, there are many books available where you can teach yourself

and i suggest you buy an electronic tuner

Best thing to do is find a book on chords and buy a tuner for your guitar. These can be found at your local Music store or guitar center. I would go with guitar center first off.

Show this to your parents:

Mom and Dad--

I hope you'll take some advice from a musician and professor.

Last summer, an old friend--a self-taught guitarist--had carpal tunnel surgery. On BOTH wrists. She joined a long list of self-taught guitarists who developed repetitive motion injuries from learning wrong.

A new guitarist needs lessons from a competent player who can see and correct errors in the fundamentals. Otherwise, the guitarist develops bad habits, and long-term will at least be unable to play as well as possible.

You can find lessons reasonably. Try putting an ad on a bulletin board at the music department of a local college; if you can get a guitar major as a teacher, it might be cheaper, and they'll certainly know their fundementals. Or ask the college to refer you to a teacher, or see about lessons at one of the better music stores.

As the student is beginning, he should practice for no more than ten minutes at a time, four or more times daily. Then each week, extend the time by a couple of minutes, eventually dropping the number until the practice is for an hour or more daily. This method yields faster progress and it also builds stamina properly, in a way that (again) avoids injuries.

After a dozen half-hour lessons (which, all told, might cost $240 at normal rates--less than a good guitar) your student should have the fundamentals down; after that, learning can continue using books, cds, and dvds. You can save money by picking up whatever looks good at a used bookstore or on ebay--if something turns out to be too advanced, just save it for after progress is made.

As parents, you should use guitar lessons as a prod for good behavior and proper completion of all school assignments :-)

There are some pretty good books, and they aren't extremely expensive either. Go and see if there are some in the library, if you like them, but you still don't want to buy it from the store, go and make some copies.

Also a really good place is Youtube. Just type in some words like guitar lesson for beginners or something like that and you'll have loads of videos. Then you can search for the tabs or chords for certain songs from the Ultimate Guitar.

I'm sure you know someone who plays guitar, so you can ask for some help. Guitarists are usually really nice persons, so even if you ask a person who you don't know so well, i'm sure he/she will be glad to help you.

And of course try to find some simple pages from the internet. There are many and they aren't so hard to find either.
I think you can find good instructions on how to tune your guitar, too, from the net. And even a tuner maybe.

Good luck!

dude im in a similar situation but im actually managing to learn the guitar just by using the internet. i struggle with alot of the chords though as some of the finger movements and positions are impossible. i got the book "guitar for dummies vol 2" its alright but i heard their are some better ones at low prices -check amazon.co.uk for some good books

Most people want to learn to play the guitar, but everyone has their own instrument, in the way american indians believed they had an animal spirit guide, that would appear to them when they had an epiphany (moment of clarity).
In your case, perhaps the reason you can't learn is because you like the image of yourself playing a guitar, but the real you prefers something else. I could be wrong, so a good way to start is to buy a simple tuner, pitch-pipes, NOT an electronic tuner, this way you will learn to tune the guitar and distinguish between what a dial says and what your ear says.
Secondly, learn the chords to a simple song you either hate or have no feeling for. Learn to play it perfectly, it will pay off in a few weeks. So a little patience is required. I personally found christian hymns to be perfect for this. That way, when you learn it properly, you will want to get away from it to better things, and so will have a passion to play things you like and also have the desire to play it right. You dont need a tutor to learn the basics, just patience, passion and desire.

get guitar lesssssssssssonsssssssss

My brother learnt to play the guitar simply from a learn step by step book and he is practically a pro now

Have you never learned to at least play by ear first, then just get yourself a book & learn Mate!

Get guitar lessons

get a guitar teacher and try to learn guitar theory, but most important play stuff that you like, if your trying to learn something you like you'll work harder on it, so if you like rock play rock country play country, ext. books are always good but if your not dedecated and dont practice youll never get good, so basically try and find time to play, ive found it best if i do warm ups, scales, play something that your working on, and then play something completly new to you

Okay you have a guitar, you are halfway there. Buy a chord book, and get music books of music you like, esp ones with a cd, so you can hear how it should sound. Guitar tab is easy to learn by yourself

Am I right to assume you're still at school, because there should be a music teacher there who could at least help you tune the guitar and maybe even start you off with a few simple chords. I taught myself from a book too when I was about 14, it's a gift to yourself for life. Wish you luck, maybe see you on YouTube soon!

ok i learnt purple haze by jimi hendrix and sunshine of your love by cream just by using youtube!!!

not ideal but a very good way to get started. always read the comments below a video as people will tell you whether its a good one to learn from. im doing this until i can afford lessons, at least im learning something!!

good luck and keep it up its well worth it when u can jam to ur fave tune

get some basic knowledge from anywhere. u hv to do is practise. As there is an old saying---Practise makes a man perfect. all the best

i love playing my guitar fingers dont respond

my son learnt off the Internet - you can purchase quite cheaply a gadget that will tune your guitar for you - if you are at school - do they not have lessons after school or can you not get a little job and pay for them Good luck

Hi! I'm learning to play guitar at the moment. I'm not having any lessons either. Well there are a few things you could use to teach yourself. Here a some of them:
1. Books. Check out your library. It's not the easiest way but if you have dedication anythings possible.
2. Friends. Do any of your friends play guitar? They could teach you and make it super fun and easy. Plus they'll speak in your language and won't make things too confusing.
3. Internet. Just search for 'free online guitar lessons.' I did that and loads come up.
4. Shops. I bought a DVD from woolworths for £1 and it's really good. Check your local shops.
5. Once you learn something impressive show your parents. They'll see how dedicated you are and may reconsider. Don't get into an argument about it though.

Well, I hope I could help you. Have fun and don't give up! Guitars are the most rewarding instruments and they make you instantly cool. It hurts a bit when you start but that wears off.
Good Luck!
Olivia

don't be discouraged by your parents , get a tuner , and not the most hip of guitar ist's but bert weedon books are excelent starter books chords are in there , play and practice but dont over do it , anyone else you know who plays ? get together with them if you can , good luck

Go to the library, lend some books for beginners learning the guitar! you can also get books on how to tune a guitar

try http://www.wholenote.com
there is a thing on here that will show you how to turn your guitar and how to read TAB`s and cords that will help you to play in under 5 min`s .

Don't bother, you are wasting your time.

You are never going to learn from the net or from books.

You must get a teacher.

You waste tons of cash on books that will never make you an accomplished guitarist.

well an easy way to learn guitar would be asking a friend who knows guitar to help you out or buy searching the net is always a great way to learn guitar or you can always by a book when i was in school i learnt how to play the tin whistle by using an easy to follow book. So good luck

well buddy you have to try and get perfect in it..Look you cant take classes that means you dont have guidance so please practise..Afterall practise makes a man perfect...

Assuming you have natural talent, go to the web and learn how to play some basic chords, from there download tabs for songs you know well and even play from CD's you have. Another good idea would be to find a friend who plays the guitar and ask him to teach you the basics.

Good luck.

If you go to ultimate guitar and search for a song

You'll get a list of the songs and on the right of the song names it will show a rating and either Guitar/guitar pro/bass or chords

Click on the guitar one[there may be a couple and in this case pick the guitar tab with the best rating]

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/ni...
for example here is a tab with the best rating to smells like teen spirit which is a good sone for beginners

youll notice that there are 6 dotted lines with numbers on some of them....they represent the strings [the top sting beginning E {which is the bottom string on tabs} ]
in other words you read tabs from the bottom up so if there is the number 5 on the 6th string of a tab you put your finger on the top string in the 5th fret and play it.

hope this helps

Just buy a trumpet. The yellow little car will do all the rest...

Just buy Guitar Hero III it saves a lot of time and produces good results and lots of fun with friends!!

Go to your nearest music shop and buy a book with a tutorial CD. The book and the CD will both help. Ask the people in the shop to help you get one that's best for you and that you can afford. - Better still.......... find a friend who can play the guitar and ask them to show you how to tune the strings, and some basic chords. I have taught myself, have two guitars now and love playing heavy rock - it can be done!

Honey do what is best. Be independent about that. i taught myself how to break dance. You can teach yourself how to play guitar. Trust me, if you teach yourself, you wont have to worry about yelling teachers because you didnt get it right the first time..lol...
