ive been to two lessons so far. hes tought me tabs. we havnt done notes yet heh. tabs are much much easier really. thats cool you play guitar too by the way haha :)

Tab is easier. Basicly, someone translated the notes into tabulation. You need to read notes, so you can do that yourself. Then, the whole world of songs is available to you.

Also, learn your chords. Then, given a fakebook or charts, you can play along.

tab

IIRC, the first books I learned from used notes. But I already knew how to read music so that was pretty easy. Later on when I got into more complex music, the books were written using both TAB and notes (a line of music notation with a corresponding line of TAB below it).

But I wish I'd spent more time learning how to play by ear when I was younger. For the first 20 years or so of playing acoustic guitar, I learned everything out of books or TABS -- which was OK as long as I was playing by myself. When I finally started playing music with other people at old-time and bluegrass jam sessions, it was really hard because I didn't know any of the tunes, and didn't have either music or TAB to read off of, and I couldn't figure anything out by ear. I had to sit where I could watch a more experienced guitar player and "read" their left hand to get the chord changes. It took me probably about a year of regular jamming with other people to learn some of the songs, and get to the point where I could hear and figure out the chord changes by ear to songs I didn't know.

So TAB and music notation are both good to know but being able to play by ear is indispensable, IMO, if you ever hope to play with other people. What are you going to do if the group you're jamming with wants to play a song that you don't have TAB or music for? And even if you have it, by the time you flip through your book and find it, the rest of the group is already halfway through the song. So the best thing you can do is learn to play by ear.

neither.....i learnt by er and after, i studied by myself. Eventually, I mastered harmony, sight reading, and what not...
