The response about strings is very spot-on... guitars are sensitive to temperature change, and if your strings are at full tension it'll place more stress on the guitar.

A gig bag would be ideal.... a plastic bag will work, but do you have a big blanket you can wrap it in also? That way you won't have to worry as much in case you bump it against something. It will also help insulate the guitar against weather change. A wool blanket, just something big enough to cover the guitar and protect both the neck and body, would be just great.

I just had a thought... folding a blanket in half, tucking the guitar in it, and sealing it shut with some duct tape might work. I'm imagining making a kind've "guitar wrap", where three sides are closed (two taped) and the fourth open (can slide the guitar in and out).

It wouldn't be pretty, but it would work.

Just a thought. Good luck! Make sure you bring a tuner... if you're playing at school, make sure you tune just before your performance. Temperature changes throw tuning off, even just a few degrees can do it.

If the guitar does not stay in the cold for very long it should be fine. You can use the garbage bag to keep it dry. Loosen the strings to relieve tension on the neck during temperature change.

take a taxi-its only one day

Triple-bag it--put it in a garbage bag, then another, and then a third.

The air space between the garbage bags will act as insulation. The guitar should be OK if it doesn't change temperature too quickly; having some insulation around it is what you need.

Long-term; find a proper bag or case. Shop ebay!

Wrap it in a blanket or piece of foam, first making sure you have loosened your strings. then you should place it in some card board box. the instrument is sensitive to change in temperature and moisture in the air (humidity)

Saul and TR both gave you good advice.

I would add that when you get to school you should put your guitar someplace out of the way where it won't get bumped into or knocked over -- leave it in the blanket and plastic bags and let it slowly warm up to room temperature for at least a half hour or more (don't put it near a radiator or other direct heat source!). Then take it out of its wrappings, and tune it up. It should be OK. You may need to tweak the tuning a bit as it continues to get acclimated to the indoor air.

Don't forget to loosen the strings again before you pack it up to take it back home.

And as soon as you can, get a hardshell case, or at least a well-padded gig bag for it!

I know how to get it for free. YOU can go and get it from freecycle just go to google and then write freecycle and then so on.

yep, a blanket will do. just take your time when you get to school and tune it slowly.
