The harder picks like 1.0mm resemble more the strength of your actual nails.
You can pick faster with a hard pick because it doesn't flex.

Thin picks flex and break and the response is much slower since the pick bends too much.

Look at the Jim Dunlop picks. They are small triangular and a good size and also used by top guitarist like Malsteem, Joe Satriani etc...

the thinner picks will bend and give you a thinner sound like smaller strings. the heavier picks wont bend as much. they are used alot in metal. i perfer a thicker pick around a 1.33 millimeter. jim dunlop make good picks. the ones with the gators on them, they have a coating to pervent slippage.

thinner picks are for people who just started playing guitar. As you get better you can get tighter ones.

Yeah, its really just a choice of preference. My boyfriend (playing professionally for 30 yrs) prefers mediums.

If I'm doing a lot of strummy-picky stuff I prefer to play mediums or lighter, because it lowers the amount of string excitation and lets me get a better overall sound...

If I'm doing anything else, especially with single note leads or palm-muting, I use around .60 size picks. I prefer Brain picks, they have a rough patch that helps me hold on to them. My hands sweat a fair amount so sometimes picks get a little slippery.

Pick sizes change a litte between manufacturer, but 1.0 or higher is heavy by any account, and down by .35 is light.
