one from a pawn shop. i bought one brand new for like 160 bucks still in the box it had some strange name on it but i turn the volume up on my small bass amp and well it is just as it sounds on my stereo. You can find one cheaper you just have to look around. Or get the bass and amp package from local music store.

depends what you wanna do with it id go with some thing from Yamaha

I like Ibanez a lot myself, they have low and high end basses and if you can find a used one you can go a little up on the quality ladder. Yamahas are decent, Fender has the Squier series, but I've never played one to be honest. Of course, you might need to define "small" to be more specific.

The Fender Squier "Vintage Modified" P-Bass or Jazz is the best value in a full size (34 inch scale). They go for $280 with a gig bag. If you're looking for a smaller bass, Epiphone makes an SG style in 32 and even 30.5 inch scale. The EB-0 Package has a small amp included for $250.
