yup

umm yeah, say you discover how to play a tune from some song. You can write tableature in the song, since you already know how it goes you have a reference. Plus, regular music just looks confusing to me

It is for people who don't want to put the time in to learning how to read music notation.....I hate tab....it's never complete....and to me it's just as easy to learn to read music, so it makes not sense to me !!!!!!!!

Historically, yes! Tablature is the forerunner of modern notation and some of the ideas have carried over. Tablature is still used today by visual or graphic learners, as well as people with learning disabilities. Some guitar players swear by it, and others don'[t have any use for it at all. My feeling is that anything that helps you learn what you need to know to play guitar is useful. If you don't have any use for it, just ignore it. I don't use tablature when I play, mainly because I never got used to it, but I can see the value it has for some students.

Some programs like Tabledit, Pwertab Editor, and Guitar Pro (I think they are up to version five now) print out a combination of tablature and notation, each on different staffs, but aligned to each other. Tef viewer is a free program that lets you print out the finished files if you ever want to experiment with it. High end programs like Sibelius and Finale do this now as well, so the trend is actually getting more prevalent.

The bottom line is, as long as someone needs it and uses it, tablature is necessary. Whether it is necessary for you,is your own decision to make. Hope this helps.

cconsaul already wrote exactly my thoughts on the issue. It's no wonder he is the top contributor in the performing arts section :D. I, unlike him, use tablature commonly. I started with it and sheet music, and it comes naturally. He's right about the programs too. I use Power Tab myself, but my Guitar Pro trial ran out. I think it costs $60 or $70 but I don't feel that it's worth it personally.
