Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Son these instruments were invented and learnt without a teacher. So yes you can lean them without teacher, but it helps.

yes, but you will most likely improve faster with a teacher

just get some lesson books and start pounding away at the ol' keyboard...or whatever else you choose

Sure, but you will only be mediocre if you never listen to anyone.

yes, if your mind works in the way where you can read music and work it out for yourself. there are many sources online for sheet music and sites that explain notes etc. that will help.

you will still need a sense of rhythm and an ear for music too!!

Yes but you need motivation and you need to keep at it. Which is hard to do if you don't have somebody showing you and giving you assignments. I do have a friend that plays guitar and he learned on his own. he is pretty good too, he teaches it now.

you can get books that can teach you how to play an instrument but it more be more helpfull and beneficial if you had a teacher or tutor

YEAH. it's really possible.
you just have to practice
the intrument. listen and try
to match up notes to songs
and melodies you already know.
you MIGHT want to start by learning
how to read notes, but it's
pretty easy. but the best thing
if to listen and to make up
rthymes. good luck!

George Gershwin taught himself!...but,unfortunately only in 'one key'...F#...

Piano and guitar is fairly easy.

Yes, but not very well. You won't learn the subtle nuances of that instrument, you won't learn the best technique, you won't have someone watching you to make sure you're engaging in the correct technique--meaning you could develop some bad habits, you won't know what method books will be best for you....get the idea?
You won't develop to your fullest potential without guidance.

yes but not well.
You have to understand basic disciplines that only a teacher can provide.

example: having good fingering and posture at a piano is not crucial, but you will not be able to move fast and fluid if you're not correctly playing.

teachers reinforce those kind of things. you can not teach yourself and critic yourself at the same time
