Strictly speaking, belting is when a woman takes her chest voice up into her head voice range; belting is a term that comes directly from musical theatre, and was used to describe such singers as Mary Martin and Eileen Rodgers. Later, the term "belter" was also applied to men and indicated that they took their chest voice up higher than one might normally expect. Belters today include Barbra Streisand, Linda Eder, and Celine Dion.

Belting does not mean pushing or forcing a sound. Belting is not quiet, but it should never be forced. Belting also doesn't mean singing loud in the head voice.

it's where you can go really loud, but still stay on key. you have to really push with your diaphragm. it's basically like showing off your voice.

SINGING REAAALLLLYYYYY LOUD!!!!!!!! LIKE THIS!!!!!!! CAN YOU HEAR ME?
But really, singing loudly. yup.

It's really singing LOUD, but also really pushing out the air as hard as you can. Most singers avoid it, and it doesn't usually make for much of a sound, but if you're in some situations, such as singing outdoors, it's all but unavoidable. It's also rough on your throat!

When you think of belting think of Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin...etc.

Belting is when you can sing loudly, but still in tune. It can be extremely hard to do...you have to really be able to sing.

Not like most American Idol auditions. :)

Eh, those answers aren't really spot-on.

Singers in musical comedy have their voices described as either "legit" or "belt". A "legit" voice is operatic--and it's just as loud if need be as a "belt", which is a less refined, more natural vocal tone.

Let's see:

In Pippin, Catherine is a "legit" and Granny is a "belt"

In Sweeney Todd, Johanna is a legit, Mrs. Lovett is a belt.

And so forth.

Now, "to belt" does suggest that you're singing out as powerfully as possible, but it's also the tonal aspect of singing in a less pure, more earthy timbre.

when your singing in your head voice your air is comming from you face when you are using you chest voice your using the air in your stomach and when your using your chest voice you can belt by using your diahphram muscels squees right where your hip bones are and push those muscels against your hands and you'll be able to hear your self belt make sure you don't use your back muscels they'll start to hurt and you'll get tired!
