Position:Home>Performing Arts> Good music to play on bass?

Question:I'm a guitarist learning to play bass. I have been playing a lot of funk and soul lately. Does anyone have any musicians to recommend? I'm looking for music with bass as the lead instrument, and have complex basslines that don't just follow the guitar.

Jaco Pastorius. If you like rock, check out some Rush. Geddy Lee leads the band on bass and sings. Very difficult, but very cool.

Chameleon by Herbie Hancock, try learning that with a couple off mates... simple riff, but soooooo fun :D

Check out 'Heavy Weather' by Weather Report. This features Jaco Pastorius, the greatest bass guitarist who has ever lived. There is no guitar at all, so it's not hard to recognise him. He played fretless bass, blazed a trail across the late 70s and early 80s, and ultimately succumbed to drink and drugs and was beaten to death by a club bouncer - tragic end for a fabulous musician. Alternatively you could try his first solo album, which is named after him. The opening track is him playing the bebop standard 'Donna Lee' - scarily brilliant.

Frank Zappa's albums of the 1970s sometimes have really great bass parts, most notably 'Zappa in New York' and 'Sheik Yerbouti'. The bassist is Patrick O'Hearn, who ended up playing new age music for a living, but who used to be amazing. Zappa's main 80s bassist was Scott Thunes, efficient rather than surprising.
