Position:Home>Performing Arts> What's an easy song to learn for a novice guitarist?

Question:I tried Hotel California...but it was too tough, I couldn't keep up. I guess I should start with someone easier....what would you recommend?

Nothing classical, and can it be modern?

Learn to play "A Horse With No Name" by America (written by Dewey Bunnell).

It has just two chords, Em and Dadd6add9. The Dadd6add9 chord is a very simple chord; it just has a complicated name.

Em = middle finger (2) on 5th string at 2nd fret, and ring finger (3) on 4th string at 2nd fret.

Dadd6add9 = middle finger (2) on 6th string at 2nd fret, and ring finger (3) on 3rd string at 2nd fret.

Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple

anything nirvana or blink 182

Enter Sandman by Metallica :)

You START by learning a few chords... I would guess you haven't done that yet.

wonderwall by oasis. it sounds awesome and its easy to play

Erm are you doing chords?
She will be loved is really simple, just Am to G for the verse then add a C in a few times for the Chorus. Here it is:

I started teaching myself guitar last March and its the first song I learnt. Or maybe Run by Snow Patrol, thats another good one for a begginer (just use the cheat F):

And if you want a bit harder go for The Calling, still pretty easy chords but you can try doing the picking bits too which are pretty basic =]
Beautiful song too:

Fire by Bruce Springsteen, just look up the tabs at www.ultimate-guitar.com/

"Hotel California" is impossible to play correctly unless you have a 12-string acoustic guitar and a capo (and you have to know where to put the capo -- 7th fret, BTW). You picked a tough one for starters. Here are some easier songs:

"Take it Easy" -- The Eagles
"Tequila Sunrise" -- The Eagles
"Southern Cross" -- Crosby Stills & Nash
"Sister Golden Hair" -- America
"Lonely People" -- America
"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" -- Green Day

Here's a short list of songs that are a little more difficult but not as tough as "Hotel California":

"More Than Words" -- Extreme
"Blackbird" -- The Beatles
"Rocky Mountain High" -- John Denver
"Annie's Song (You Fill Up My Senses)" -- John Denver
"Longer" -- Dan Fogelberg
"Stairway to Heaven" -- Led Zeppelin
"Fire and Rain" -- James Taylor
"You've Got a Friend" -- James Taylor

You may want to invest in some guitar books. One book I recommend is "The Ultimate Guitar Fake Book" -- it gives you down-and-dirty diagrams and chords for over 100 popular songs. Check out the following website for an excellent variety and some of the best prices on guitar books and videos/DVDs:

P.S.: Avoid anything by the Goo-Goo Dolls -- nothing against them; it's just that ol' Rzeznick likes to play a lot of songs with alternate tunings.

Lyin' Eyes - Eagles
Imagine - John Lennon
Margaritaville - Buffet

Almost anything my band plays ;-)

AC/DC - Hell's Bells is just variations on an Am chord.
