It depends on the strings, how much you play, and how well you take care of them.

When the bass string goes dead and the top strings have lost their brilliance is when your strings are effectively dead, but they'll still last quite a bit longer after that.

Wash your hands before you use your guitar, use something like GHS Fastfret or Guitar Honey on your strings, wipe your strings off with a clean cloth after you play, try to sweat on your strings as little as possible, and your strings will sound better for a longer period of time.

I also suggest getting Elixirs. Just using elixirs alone will double, if not triple, your string life.

I play 8-10 hours a week and have up to 3 hour long gigs a month. On stage I tend to beat the crap out of my guitar and inevitably sweat all over it (I'm a very active player). With elixirs and doing as many of the above tips as I can, my strings usually last a few months. But that's electric.

I haven't changed my acoustic's strings in a long time, but they're also pretty dead. I tend to be pretty lazy about the acoustic, but that's life - again, using Elixirs means the brilliance lasts a few weeks and they are dead after 2-3 months.

Make sure you use that tuner! Keeping your strings in tune will help train your ear.... And don't buy those 10-packs of strings from Guitar Center, they're crap for quality.

Good luck!

Yeah you generally want to change them every few months. But as far as twangyness, it's not because they need to be changed that might just be the quality and/or the size of the strings or simply the sound of your guitar. Some guitars are more twangy than others.

Weird...those are the strings that should hold more than the rest.I would've expected you mentioning the E and A strings!
Strings need to be changed after a few months...be sure you get the best ones! Ernie Balls are one of the best! And D'Agostino too!
Don't turn the keys too much...they lose their elasticity!!! After changing the strings, don't tune it right away! Let the strings straighten for 1 day...and in the next day you're free to tune it.Tune it right and don't tune it again the next day or smth, cause they're definately going to lose their their elasticity and detune.

I change about once a month. I burn through strings very quickly.

I change mine every month, sometimes every two weeks. My fingers seem to sweat out acid!!!

One guy I play guitar with has a Strat that he hasn't changed the strings on in a year - and they still sound brand new!!

So it's pretty much down to how much you play. How much you sweat and how much money you can afford to pay for strings.

A good way to increase the lifespan of strings is to always wipe down the neck and strings when you have finished playing, I use an old (clean) bar towel. I also wipe them from time to time with something called Fast Fret.

Remember too that putting new strings on can be an absolute inspiration to your playing.
