Position:Home>Performing Arts> Cracking Clarinet- Humidity Options?

Question:I have a wooden clarinet that is about a year old. It has cracked twice, despite the fact that I keep a humidifier in the case and oil it several times a year. Both cracks were pinned, but recently the old cracks opened up again. I have three questions: can I safely play it even though it is cracked? (auditions are quickly approaching) What will prevent it from cracking again? Do orange peels really work to keep it moist?

Thank You.

the orange peels idea has never really worked for me, though i have heard of it before. You might need to store your clarinet in a different place as well, in a cooler, dark place may help. In answer to can you safely play it? well it really depends on where the cracks are. but cracks generally mean that your instrument won't be as air tight at the moment, which means it wont sound as good when you play it. Also, what oil are you using? you might need to find a better oil, and oil it more often.

hope this helps!

Go to a music store! Where did you buy it? Sounds like you need bore oil--but I'd consult with the store you purchased from..they may owe you---they'd also sell you the bore oil..get some cork grease too just in case.. Most stores that specialize in musical instruments-have insightful people working for them..it's what they do--they're a Font of knowledge and will have ready answers for you..ask them.

go to the music store and ask if they can fix it or see if you can get the part(s) that is broken
