Position:Home>Performing Arts> My roommate attempted to string his accoustic guitar. I attempted to tune it for

Question:the tuning knobs felt strange. Then, when I got it into tune, when you strum it, the strings produce the sound of the note along with this annoying vibrating sound that seems like it's coming from the tuning part of the guitar. What most likely is the problem?

Tuning knob could be lose, the action could have changed and the string could be vibrating against the first fret or two, the string might not be seated in the nut well, etc. I would suggest taking it to a guitar tech to have it fixed properly.

That said, sometimes when you knock a guitar over a tuning knob will hit something and get loosened, like the actual screw that holds it into the wood will loosen or strip or gouge out some additional wood.

If that was the case, I would loosen all of the strings so there wasn't any tension on the neck, unscrew that tuning knob, and use some wood glue to glue a toothpick into the hole. Make sure and blunt the tip of it, or snap the tip of it off first, and only use enough wood glue to coat the part of the toothpick sticking into the hole. Leave it for 24 hours, then snap the rest of the toothpick off. Screw the tuning knob back on, and you're good to go! Of course, I wouldn't do this if your guitar is worth anything.... take it to a tech would be the first choice!

That was one of the coolest tips I was ever given about fixing a guitar. Hope it helped.

The tuning machines are under a lot of stress when a guitar is in tune. Depending on how they are designed, they could be coming apart. Also, the bridge at the top of the finger board could be worn and your strings might be vibrating against the first fret.

Please don't glue your guitar. Take it to a shop or someone who knows about guitars and have them show you how to string it.
Good luck!
