Question:In band class today, I was presented with the opportunity to student direct a piece for our next concert. I'm thrilled, but I honestly don't know anything about it. Any tips for student directing? Thanks!

What a great honor! Make sure that you are easy to follow first. Think about the mood of the piece and make sure that you direct in a way that works with it. Research the piece and make sure that you have it memorized in case you lose your place or get nervous. Most of all, have fun!

You need to learn how to conduct

Be sure to know any time sig changes in the piece...Also don't be afraid to get into the music...Show emotion with your conducting when needed.

Hope this helps a little! Congrats!!

First of all, make sure you know how to conduct all of the different time signatures in the piece. Then go through the score and see if there are any difficult spots you need to practice (page turns, cues, time signature changes, accelerandos, etc.). After marking them all, do the obvious and practice them. I would recommend taking a music stand and going somewhere with a mirror, like your bathroom, to practice. You might even want to conduct to a recording of a song.

Anyway, good luck!
