Even the top singers keep seeing a vocal coach--Pavarotti continued to get training throughout his career. You cannot assess your own vocal tone well, as you are aware if you ever heard a recording, your voice sounds differently inside your own head than it does to the outer world.

So your best recourse is to find an alternative to that expensive, embarrassing voice teacher you formerly employed. Shop around and find a teacher whose approach suits you. Consider putting up ads at the music department of a local college, maybe an upper-level voice major would enjoy taking you on as a student--and would charge less than an established professional.
