The conductor male or female has several responsibilities
1) Keep the beat
2) Study the score and interpret the score how they think the copmposer would have wanted the piece to be played
3) Cue musicians to come in esp if there are more then one
4) Signal to the orchestra dynamics. tempo articulations etc
5) The conductor is also responsibile for the whole rehearsal e.g. starting on time etc

If it is a musical /opera or any other thing where singers are involved they also cue them in as well

He or she keeps the beat. Without them, some people would be ahead, some behind, and they also que people in.

Conductors do a lot more than keep the beat. They establish the mood and character of the piece. In an orchestra you have many players, all with their own ideas on how a piece should be played. The conductor is there to give one interpreation and to give guidance to all the players.

Without the conductor it would nearly impossible for an orchestra to play as a unit instead of a bunch of individuals.
