Position:Home>Performing Arts> Are comedians funnier while they're on stage?

Question:I have a lot of songs and stuff I made up and I have always wanted to maybe do a couple amateur shows for people. I can get laughs out of my jokes and if I tell someone a joke I heard a comedian tell its usually about the same response as mine. Maybe they do better at their own jokes cuz they wrote them.

I do think however that once a comedian is on stage they are expected to be funny and the jokes people tell get more response on stage than they do off. Would my songs and jokes have that same impact or am I just way off?

You really can't judge how well a joke or song is going to do based on only running them by your friends. I have had friends in stitches at a party and then tried the same jokes doing standup comedy and bombed. This is not meant to discourage you - it's just to let you know audiences may or may not have the same sense of humor as your friends. Audiences have totally different personalities as well - I've done shows where my jokes will bomb one night and the next week will totally bring down the house.

The only way to really know how well your material works is to actually play your music/tell your jokes in front of an actual audience. Start out at a music or comedy open mic night and give it your best shot. When you get to a funny part of your song or after you tell a joke, pause a bit and give the audience time to laugh. If you get good laughter, wait for it to die down then start the rest of your act. Good luck!
