Position:Home>Performing Arts> Suggestions to learning the bassoon [specifically the embouchure]?

Question:I've been a flute player for about 4 years and I've been offered by my band directed the opportunity to try the bassoon. However, I've never played on a double reed instrument before and I have no idea what the embouchure is going to be like. Can anyone suggest a syllable or phrase I could use to start off with? [Like "too" or "doo" on the flute?] Also, are there any other hints I could use to make my ability better? Thanks! =]

You do not need to squeeze the reed. Your mouth should be relaxed, just sealing around the reeds. If the reed is adjusted correctly, you won't need to squeeze. You will have to get a lessons teacher. When tonguing, you don't need a phrase. You just tap the tip of the reed with your tongue. You need to work on your air support. In order to avoid pinching the reed, you need to put enough air into playing to overcome the resistance of the reed and the instrument. Start by trying out a variety of reeds. You will need to learn which strength works best for you and which brand that is available to you is best for you. Store your reeds in a ventilated case. If they begin to taste bad or grow nasty things, soak them overnight in lemon juice and rinse them clean. You should always soak your reed before playing, just sticking it in your mouth won't do. There are a lot of little things, too many to list here, but your lessons teacher can help you pick up on as you need them.
