Position:Home>Performing Arts> How to be an exotic male dancer?

Question:Im thinking about doing it on the side cuz i need money so badly for school.

Im not sure if I could even do it.

1) Im an in-shape male, slightly muscular but nowhere near RIPPED like you see some of those guys
2) Im a hairy fellow.... do they even accept hairy guys?
3) even on a slow night the money is pretty good right?
4) because im not ripped and am hairy....do they have like uhmm coctail-boys like in women's strip clubs?
5) I also can't do the splits...does that matter?

Any male with who is in this proffession i would like to hear how you did it, and any tips

I'm not in the biz but have friends that are. You don't mention where you are or what venues you're thinking of performing in. For example, male strippers for women are usually long-haired, ripped and tan, and have their routines choreographed (think Chippendales or Thunder from Down Under in Las Vegas). Male strippers for men frequently perform in bars and clubs and their look varies from twink to bodybuilder and everything in between. I've seen some hairy strippers that get as much attention as those who are trimmed, shaved, or hairless.

Stripping is regulated at the state level and regs change from state to state. Generally, when alcohol is served you strip to a g-string. If no alcohol is served, strippers can go the full monty.

Think of it as a sales position, only the product you're selling is yourself. I know gay and straight male strippers who strip for men. Interestingly, even the straight males prefer to strip for men because the men are more circumspect and don't have long, scratchy acrylic nails. There's still the occasional groper, but you learn techniques to deal with roving hands. In a one-on-one tipping situation, you're flirting heavily. If you have a stage segment, you might do some pole tricks but there's no requirement to do the splits. Some dancing, or at least the ability to move to the beat of the music, is needed.

I would suggest going to a venue and talking to some of the strippers. They're usually pretty open to talking because they get tired of just being objectified. Ask if there are any licensing requirements (some states have them) and ask about an amateur night or an audition. Pay scale varies; in bars its usually a base rate (ex. $80) + tips. Tips vary depending on the number of patrons, plus if you appear frequently you're likely to build up a group of regulars. One friend of mine does not have a day job and strips 5 or 6 days a week, yet manages to pay all his bills so he must be doing something right.

Good luck!

It's true that as an exotic dancer, most of the success relies on your look. But actually, a good dancing technique, and a confident non cocky smile will give you success above how good you look. Women, mostly want to feel comfortable before being aroused. You can start on your own for private parties I think with a personal ad. Then you can go further...

This reminds me of the story of a man who was watching the circus and the elephants came by and were followed by a little man sweeping up the elephants' droppings. The first man said to the guy sweeping, "Do you do this everyday?" The sweeper said, "yes." The man said, "Why don't you get a real job?"
The sweeper looked at the man and said, "What? And leave show business?"
