I would say : begin with the story. All good scripts (plays or musicals) begin with a concept. Also, don't set out with the mindset of writing hit songs. Musical numbers should come from the character and serve as an extension of their dialogue. (Does that make sense?) I was setting out to write a musical based on my experiences while living in an isolated mountain village. Surprisingly, when I decided on my characters and what part of that experience to include, many of my songs wrote themselves. Hopefully, the same will prove true for you, as well.

Start with a message. What do you want to say? What idea or story do you want to get across? Write a story, get a plot -- KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING WITH IT. Then start writing lyrics -- then music. Have a theme, but don't use the same song over and over. It's dull. People are dumb and pop music is easy, but go for it. Make it interesting.

Also, do you know a lot about music? Because if not, you should take some music theory classes.

Good luck!

A good idea is to start with the"book" that's the script. While you're doing this, remember what themes you want to introduce into the frame of the story, that's where the music and lyrics come in.It's hard work,so don't kid yourself, but it's do-able.Look at the young man who wrote,"Rent" one of the most stunning debuts by an unknown that Broadway's seen in years and he worked on it in between waiting on tables,so you're in good company
